InvisiLight Home Fiber Kit

The InvisiLight Home Fiber Kit is a do-it-yourself, point-to-point Ethernet extension for places where ordinary network cable would be visually intrusive. It runs a pre-terminated, 0.6 mm single-mode fiber along baseboards, trim, corners, or exterior walls and converts the connection back to copper Ethernet at both ends.

In practical terms, its advantage is the discreet cable route—not extra speed. The supplied media converters cap the link at 1 Gb/s, so short Cat 5e or Cat 6 runs can provide the same throughput more simply and without requiring power at both ends.

The bend-insensitive G.657.B3 fiber can follow tight corners with little attenuation, but it must not be pinched. A broken fiber cannot be repaired or spliced within this system; the run must be replaced.

The kit includes two media converters and power adapters, two Ethernet cables, the fiber spool and wall module, adhesive and applicator tips, cleaning wipes, painter’s tape, wall plugs, and a through-wall tool.

Installation

  1. Plan a route along baseboards, moldings, and wall corners. Avoid locations where a door or furniture could pinch or rub the fiber.
  2. Unspool and temporarily secure the entire route with painter’s tape.
  3. Connect both converters and test the Ethernet link before gluing or mounting anything.
  4. Clean and dry the route, then work back toward the wall module while applying a fiber-sized bead of adhesive in 6–9 m (20–30 ft) sections.
  5. Allow roughly 30 minutes for normal sections to dry. Corners held with tape can take up to three hours; the adhesive cures fully after 24 hours and can then be painted.
  6. Wind excess fiber back onto the spool without pinching it and mount the module with the supplied hardware or removable mounting strips.

Limitations

  • The kit connects only one link. Connecting several devices requires a network switch, router, or mesh node at the far end.
  • Both media converters need mains power, adding two active components to what would otherwise be a passive cable run.
  • The manufacturer lists availability only in the United States and U.S. territories.
  • The product FAQ says all converter DIP switches should be on, while the linked converter guide specifies a default of switches 1–7 on and switch 8 off. Leave the factory settings unchanged unless Lightera support confirms otherwise.
  • The fiber itself may support much higher future bandwidth, but the included converters do not: this kit is limited to Gigabit Ethernet.

Good uses

  • Providing wired backhaul for a mesh node on another floor
  • Reaching a computer, game console, or media center without visible Ethernet cable
  • Crossing a route where a very thin, paintable cable matters more than cost or simplicity
